If you have another craft with your child, separate the insects and animals. For example, spiders and ladybugs are insects, while birds and cows are animals. What a great way to teach the difference between animals and insects, right?

To complete this craft, you will need the following supplies: an “L” template, black and red construction paper, sticker eyes, black pipe cleaners, markers, scissors, and glue.

First, use the letter “L” template and have the child trace it on black construction paper with a marker. Then cut it. If this is too difficult for the child, you can make the letter “L”.

Then, using the can lid, ask the child to trace it on red construction paper, make a circle, and cut it out. Encourage the child to cut a circle, but it is not easy to cut a circle, but it is possible. They can do it!

Then draw a line in the center of the circle and fold the child in half. This allows the child to push and twist with finger strength using hand-eye coordination. Have the child cut a line to make the wings of the ladybug. Then have the child use a marker to point out the ladybug’s spots by putting dots on the wings! Ladybugs have spots, right?

Using the eye stickers, encourage the child to peel and stick the eye stickers to the top of the letter “L”. Ask the child if the ladybug has a mouth. If so, draw them with a marker that allows you to improve your writing skills.

Then ask the child to glue the wing under the mouth, in front of the letter L. You have to guide the child to spread and stick the wing.

It was a favorite for both me and the kids. They liked to press the red paint and leave a mark. Then they carefully drew two handprints for lobster claws. The next day they took out their black markers and decorated them. This idea was from Crafty-Crafted.

I used a circle cutter (love this thing!) to make red circles for the kids. After gluing the green rectangles, make an “L”, glue the circles to the bottom, and decorate it to look like a ladybug. It was tempting to show five of my projects in this post, but you have to understand that kids aren’t always “into” every project. They may be tired, disinterested, or just having a bad day. My four loved it, but eventually she decided to start scratching her ladybugs. I remind them that crafting shouldn’t be about the finished product, it should be about enjoying the process and learning for kids.
