This week I had the opportunity to work with teachers at the Garden State Google Summit. During one of my sessions on creating animations with Google Slides, a teacher of mine started a conversation about other ways to use Google Slides in her classroom.
Google Slides is one of the most versatile tools for G Suite users. In fact, there are hundreds of ways to use slides outside of the traditional presentation we’re all used to.
During the conversation, we discussed ways to use Google Slides to create publishable assets. The teacher explained to me that they had just completed a project where they were making a paper tri-fold brochure to show what was happening in their curriculum. While this was a fun and engaging activity, the teacher was looking for something simpler. Come in… Google Slides!

As mentioned earlier, Google Slides can be used in a variety of ways. Using slides to create a tri-fold brochure is actually pretty easy. All you have to do is follow a few simple steps to customize your slide layout to match your final project.
The first thing you should do is customize your page layout. You can do this by going to File – Page Setup and setting the “Custom” size in the drop down menu to 11 x 8.5. This creates a canvas that matches the size of the printed sheet of paper.
The next step is to figure out where the “fold” will be after the booklet is printed. Setting up temporary policies ensures that you create your content blocks in the right place.
Not At Any Slice
One benefit of creating a Google Slides brochure is that you can add anything you want to the project. For example, you can click Insert – Chart to insert different charts, timeline, price fields or other cool elements to create dynamic looking data brochures.
Luckily, you don’t have to go through all the steps required to create your own trifold brochure. Simply sign up for the Insider program and your custom brochure template will be emailed directly to you.

Combining research skills and creativity isn’t always easy, which is why I love this historical travel brochure project. Students can demonstrate their ability to interpret, analyze and synthesize historical information while creating a unique travel brochure that highlights the unit of study. A historical travel brochure can be divided into six sections or panels. Each section represents a different aspect of the historic site. Each panel of the historical travel brochure is detailed below.
The cover of a brochure contains a headline, an image and a sentence that entices the reader to travel to that region or region. The cover should be appealing and show creativity. I tell the students that the purpose of the cover is to generate interest in the room. Creating a great cover requires a catchy headline, a colorful photo, and an inviting sentence.
A frequently asked questions section encourages students to think critically about a historic site. I have the students ask three questions based on the historical setting.
