The excess will be trimmed and discarded. For example, a standard 5 x 7 inch invitation design would actually be 5.25 x 7.25 inches and an eighth of an inch would be cut from each side to ensure it goes straight to the edge.”

Make sure the designer knows in advance what type of file you will need to print to avoid too much back and forth. “Printing as a PDF will have higher quality than a JPEG,” says Weber. “But each printing option, whether online or at a local print shop, will have a different file type requirement.”
You’ve thought about how much paper will cost, but ink can be expensive too. “If you have a colorful background, you’re going to use a lot of ink, which can really affect the cost of your invitations,” says Fontaine. “Also, a not-so-new printer can show imperfections in large areas of color.” Leaving the paper visible while incorporating bright colors into the design can be the best way to print at home.
If you have an eye for white printing your invitations, consider having a printer handle the project. Often, invitations displayed in white fonts actually use a colored background and the parts of the design that show white do not print.
