Mitten Craft Preschool – We have been stuck at home for the last month due to cold and snow. There are days when I feel like our house is an icebox and I’m stuck on the couch, not wanting to move. It’s fun though and I’m ready for summer to be here… I’m sure it will be a while! Welcome to Wyoming!!!
Since the cold weather and staying indoors has been so nice throughout our lives this past month, that’s also what inspired the kid’s craft I’m sharing with you all today.

The first step to making this fun winter craft is to download and print the Winter Mitten template.
If you decide to do steps 4 and 5 I highly recommend using card stock. Or if you want to use paint or watercolor, use good quality mixing paper.

I took some simple mitten shapes beforehand, cut them out, and glued them to white craft paper. Kids get to choose from foam squares (our design of the month), craft ornaments (with stickies on the back), and sequins (who doesn’t love sequins?!) to place anywhere on their mittens.

What a great motor sport! They are very happy to touch and pick up all the colorful shiny objects! Some of them ran their fingers through the sequins, just to feel it.
I had to help glue the backs (or get sticky-backs from the decorations), and we learned to glue the side down on the paper, instead of standing up and showing. Glue on the hands is also very interesting.
We did it once so I could control and make sure none of the 22-28 month olds put small pieces in their mouths. They have been very good at it since we make our own colored bottles each month (more on that coming soon). A student pointed to the sequin, looked at me, shook her head, and said, “I can’t eat that.”

It’s always fun to see where the kids put each ornament. Sometimes they are all over the place, and sometimes there is a pattern. Some things are close together, some things show up in both mittens, and some places become one color.
After decorating, glue a cotton ball (stretch) to the bottom of each mitten. At the top I wrote, “God, thank you for warm clothes to wear”.
If we had more time I could have spread it out within 2 days, let them color them with mittens or paint them with water colors before gluing the decorations on. But I think that they came out really cute. Winter is the perfect season for mitten crafts! Kids of all ages—especially toddlers and preschoolers—will enjoy using free mitten patterns, washable paints, and basic craft supplies such as sequins, beads, and more. stickers, and paper punches to make colorful and fun crafts at home or at school.

If pieces of wool warm our hands, surely pieces of paper warm our hearts! Colorful pairs of mittens that kids make look great on bulletin boards, at home or around the classroom. Pair this fun winter craft with:
1. Download and print the free PDF Mitten Template on white cardstock. You will need 1 copy per child.
2. Invite your child to fill their mittens. Choose a cool winter color scheme or invite your child to choose their own colors. We also did this craft for Christmas, painting the mittens bright red and green!

Alternatively, children can color the model with crayons, markers or colored pencils. It can also be used as a template to trace onto glossy paper, felt, or craft foam.
3. When the paint is dry, cut out the mittens, then invite your child to decorate them with sequins, glitter, foam stickers, or paper cutouts.
5. If desired, place each pair of mittens on a piece of construction paper to display on a bulletin board or wall.

3. As you place the mittens on the bulletin board, create a table of mittens by placing each pair separately and allowing the cotton threads to overlap, cross, and loop throughout the bulletin board. The bulletin board title, “Can you match our missing mittens?”
Kids will enjoy starting with a mitten, then following their string of yarn around the bulletin board to find a match with their shoes!
