Pokemon Go hunters will likely be out in force this Halloween night, so we thought it would be really fun to make Bulbasaur and Ivysaur lanterns and join the Pokemon Go hunt!
Ever since I first saw the cute frog-like creature (Bulbasaur) with a bulb growing out of its back, I’ve been thinking about making a succulent planter in its honor. What could be more like a planter than the little pumpkin I see everywhere when I shop, right now? It wasn’t smart.
Now let’s get started! Lay the pumpkin on its side as if the stem were Bulbasaur’s tail. Bulbasaurs don’t actually have a tail, but we’ll ignore that for now. Feel free to cut off the stem if you have a purist in the house. Now that your pumpkin is on its side, cut a flat spot on the bottom where it will rest on the ground so it doesn’t roll. Then cut a large hole in the top, big enough to fit your succulent with some room. Scoop out all the seeds and pulp from the pumpkin with a spoon and scoop out our pumpkin.

Turn the pumpkin so the side away from the stem is facing you, cut out a big wide mouth in the middle, and add “bitty little fangs” to each side. It’s almost as if Bulbasaur has always dreamed of becoming a terrifying lantern with its cute little fangs. (If you need a template to help you with the cuts, we’ve made one for you here!) Next, cut out the Bulbasaur eyes on either side of the wide mouth. We cut out small pieces on the left so that we could allow large pupils to see on the right.
Instead of cutting out the large rounded triangular eyes, we shaved the inner pupil by just removing the skin of the pumpkin with the side of a knife. Next, we cut out some triangular spots on Bulbasaur’s forehead. We also added ears by cutting the succulent plant hole a little lower but leaving the ears sticking up. See the template (downloadable above) if you have any questions.
This is about when I discovered that the pot my succulent came in was a bit too big for the hole I cut. I didn’t want to just plant a succulent in a pumpkin without a pot because I wanted to be able to light up his face later and I didn’t want dirt spilling out of the Bulbasaur’s eyes and mouth (although that could be fun too) so I found a smaller pot for the succulent. You can also use a small paper cup or even shape a tin foil cup if you prefer.

I then carefully (for battery safety) rested my tea light on the bottom of the pumpkin, facing forward, and then inserted my succulent. I also added some Bulbasaur feet with pumpkin scraps and toothpicks, but you can easily skip this step.
When we finished the job, my kids and I realized that our Bulbasaur lantern could easily “evolve” into an Ivysaur lantern. I pulled a large artificial flower out of the storage box and voila!
The flower idea actually turned out great when I placed the Ivysaur jack-o’-lantern outside because the tea light lit up the flower! But whether or not you decide to develop your own Bulbasaur lantern, it’s sure to be a hit this year at Trick-or-Treat, we predict!

I have a friend whose son is obsessed with pokemon. He came across the show on Netflix when he was in preschool, and the die was cast.
Let The Halloween Pumpkin Carving Begin
He plays games with his parents. He plays-acts characters with his friends. He had more than one themed birthday party. He learned to read with Pokémon books. He sleeps with a stuffed Pikachu. He takes the opportunity to watch videos and play video games. Finally, he knows more about Pokemon card trading than anyone I’ve ever met.
His enthusiasm for the entire franchise is amazing and I know he’d love to carve a Pokemon pumpkin for Halloween this year.
The question is: Which Pokémon character template would you most like to carve into a pumpkin? Do you want scary or funny? Something that can double as a Pokemon Halloween decoration (affiliate link) or a spectacular carved pumpkin to display for one night only?
Jack O Lantern Spectacular This Weekend
I should have known that the most common and popular Pokemon pumpkin idea: Pikachu or Charmander, would not be interesting enough for this kid.
When his mom started suggesting ideas for characters I’d never heard of, (ahem, terrible) I knew I had some learning to do before I shared all the ways to celebrate Halloween with Pokemon.

Cut a “door” square between 6 and 8 inches into the back of your pumpkin instead of removing the stem. Scrape out the pulp and seeds, then use an antibacterial cloth to clean the outside.
Place the stencil on a sheet of carbon transfer paper and attach it to the pumpkin. Use a ballpoint pen to mark all the lines in the stencil. This will upload your template to
