Go to your school’s financial aid section, or Google “(Name of School) Schools or Grants” to find the page. Each school has different scholarships and grants, programs and awards and policies. Some scholarships/grants are available to all students, and others are very specific and limited. Appeal processes also differ from school to school. Find out if there are specific forms you need to fill out by contacting the school. It is your responsibility to learn about the different options and requirements, so do your part before asking for help! And I remember, and the vestibule of the merits according to the needs.

After reviewing your appeal letter, the financial aid office may use “professional judgment” in Higher Education Act Section 479(a) [“HEA”] and decide to grant you additional financial aid. You must provide proof of your financial situation before making a decision, so you have these documents ready.

According to college aid experts, the average increase in merit aid is between $1,000 and $5,000. Admissions officers may not be knowledgeable about financial aid processes, but they can provide you with information about additional studies or grants you may be eligible for. Also, be sure to ask if the help changes. You don’t want to think that you’re going to receive the grant every year, when it’s a one-time grant. This is particularly important because tuition is expected to increase each year, while the amount of aid remains the same or decreases.
No colleges are exempt when it comes to “equalization of value”. Do you have a better situation from another college? Learn the value that the competing college offers you (or simply state that it is more than what the target school offers you), and make it clear that you are willing to attend the target school if additional aid is offered to you. A final tip (which I used in my appeal letter to Fordham University, which earned me an additional $7,000) is to let the college know that if they don’t offer aid, you should choose that other college. I can’t remember the exact words I used in the appeal letter, but it was something like this: “I want to attend Fordham University, but without additional aid, I choose X University, where I was offered $Y in scholarship.” And it worked: I received an additional $7,000 in tuition over four years, saving me $28,000!
Even though you are applying to college, you don’t say this! Making a deposit before you receive a response to your financial appeal will only reduce your chances of receiving additional aid because the college will correctly assume that you will attend the college regardless of whether or not they have helped you with additional aid. But let the college know that by not making a deposit, writing your plan will depend on whether you get further aid or not.

Don’t wait to hear back the next day when you email the Financial Aid and Admissions Office; give them a week or two to respond. If you’re pressed for time, send a follow-up email or call services to ask for more help. Be sure to apply Electronic Etiquette #7 when you follow up.
When they respond, it’s your turn to move again. Whatever documents they ask for, follow all instructions carefully. Thank them for their help and keep that money! So you get accepted to a great college (yay!) only to find out the school doesn’t give you enough money (womp womp). What are you doing? Do you accept your fate? Let you go back to your game? You said to think: Is this all the money the school can give me? Could it be that if you ask nicely and write letters asking for financial aid, the school would give you less?

True story: When I asked Northwestern for more money, the school gave me more money, AND THAT led to the best four years of my life. In fact, only spend about $4000 a year.
