Continents Quiz Printable
Continents Quiz Printable – Teaching geography has become something of an enigma. We know it is extremely important for our students to be able to identify the major continents and oceans, but it is a struggle to find the spare time to create a map activity and the corresponding assessment. If you can relate to this difficulty and are looking for a quick and easy way to incorporate basic world geography skills, the printable world map and quiz below should help.
Students begin the lesson by making their own world map. The accompanying black outline map and directions ask students to identify, label, and color code all the continents, oceans, and the equator. Studies have shown that using color can help students differentiate, retain and transfer knowledge. As teachers, we can take advantage of color coding and apply the strategy to our own teaching. With map activities, the active process of labeling and color coding will help students organize their thinking and internalize geographic information. For this particular map lesson, the included instructions are written for students to follow independently and complete at their own pace. It is important to emphasize the importance of clarity and order. The purpose of the exercise will be lost if students cannot read their completed maps.

After students have completed the outline map, they will be ready to answer the questions included on the map. The questions are designed to give students a chance to access and apply what they have learned about world geography. In addition to analysis and application, students practice working with their maps before taking the assessment. Students must also use directional references. For example, the first question asks students to identify the ocean that lies west of North America. Ideally, completing this world map activity will establish a foundation of basic geographic knowledge that will assist students with future map assignments.

The map assessment consists of twelve matching questions and students will use their completed map as a reference when taking the assessment. Students must match the continents, oceans, and equator to the correct letter on the map. Allowing students to use the completed map gives them a chance to take ownership of their learning. If the contour map is correct, it should have no problem completing the assessment accurately. Overall, the assessment measures how well students have completed the blank outline map and whether students are able to read and access information presented in a map format. To test knowledge of memorized geographical locations, students must take the assessment without using their ready-made maps.
Incorporating mapping lessons and activities into your teaching is an important way to encourage critical thinking, increase engagement, embrace differentiation, generate connections and support interdisciplinary learning. It takes global knowledge of the Earth, its oceans and continents to map a map of the world. It would have been impossible to create an accurate map of the world from prehistory to the Middle Ages, since less than half of the Earth’s coastlines and only a small part of its continental interior were known to any culture. Knowledge of the Earth’s surface accumulated rapidly with exploration beginning during the European Renaissance, so that most of the world’s coastlines were mapped by at least the mid-18th century and continental interiors by the 20th century.
