But it may surprise more students and families that more colleges than you might think will say “yes” to your request for more help. And that’s exactly what a plea for financial aid is – a request for help.
NOTE TO PARENTS: If you can – and will – help your child through this process, please do not write to them – colleges will not look favorably on this.
So as long as your request is reasonable, colleges or universities will consider your request for more aid!

Go to the financial aid section of your school’s website or Google “(school name) scholarships and grants” to find the page. Each school has different types of scholarships and grants, programs and awards, and policies. Some scholarships/grants are available to all students and some have specific and limiting criteria. Appeals procedures differ from school to school. Check to see if there are specific forms you need to complete before contacting the school. It’s your responsibility to learn about the different options and requirements, so do your part before asking for help! And remember, there are merit-based scholarships and need-based ones.
3. Provide all required information (such as your current grant status and any forms you have completed) and describe your financial situation/circumstances.
After reviewing your appeal letter, the Financial Aid Office may exercise the “professional judgment” provided by Section 479(a)[“HEA”] of the Higher Education Act and decide to award you more financial aid. You may need to provide proof of your financial status before making a decision, so have these documents ready.

Reaching the financial aid office is only half the job; Students should also contact the Admissions Office. The Admissions Office, as the name suggests, cares about admitting students they believe will improve their institution (like you!). They want to help you as much as possible.
1. Ask them if there are ways you can get additional aid or if they can increase the amount of aid(s) you are currently eligible for.
According to college aid experts, a typical increase in merit aid is between $1,000 and $5,000. Admissions officers may not have information about financial aid processes, but they can give you information about additional scholarships or grants you may qualify for. Also, be sure to ask if the assistance is renewable. You don’t want to assume that you will receive the aid amount every year, when in reality it is a one-time award. This is especially important because tuition increases each year and the amount of aid remains the same or decreases.

Colleges are no exception when it comes to “price matching.” Do you have a good offer from another college? Mention the amount that a competing college is offering you (or simply indicate that it is being offered at the target school), and make it clear that you would like to attend the target school if you were offered additional aid. An additional pro tip (which I used in my application letter to Fordham University that earned me an extra $7,000) is to let the college know that if you don’t get extra aid, you’ll have to choose another college. I don’t remember the exact wording I used in my letter of appeal, but it was something like this: “I want to attend Fordham University, but without additional help, I will have to choose X University, where I will be offered a $Y f ‘scholarship.’ And it worked! I received an additional $7,000 in scholarships over four years, saving me $28,000!
Even if you are committed to college, don’t say this! If you make a deposit before receiving a response to your financial appeal, it reduces your chances of receiving additional aid because the college will reasonably assume that you will attend the college whether or not they award you additional aid. Instead, by not making a deposit, let the college know that your decision to enroll depends on whether or not you receive more aid.
Don’t expect to hear back the day after you send an email to the financial aid and income offices; Give them a solid week or two to respond. If you’re pressed for time, send a follow-up email or call the offices to request further assistance. Be sure to apply email etiquette tip #7 when following up.
