Cornucopia Art Projects – I don’t think I have the patience for that. Plus, the room always has messy threads tangled everywhere, scraps of fabric on my floor, and hidden needles ready to stab me when I least expect it.

However, scrolling through pinterest the other day, I came across a toddler craft that I had to try.

For this year’s Thanksgiving craft, the kids used air dry clay to make an antler. Colorful air dry clay is lightweight and easy for little hands to sculpt. We leave fruits and vegetables and a photo of a cornea as inspiration. While crafting, we talked about Thanksgiving, harvest, shapes, colors, and size comparison. My 4 and 5 year olds enjoyed recreating pumpkins, apples, carrots and grapes and included some fantastic vegetables. My daughter added a face to each meal. I also joined in the crafting fun. Air dry clay isn’t just for little kids!

Work on a craft tray (we use sheet metal for craft trays) or wax paper taped to the table.

Air dry clay will begin to dry after exposure, but will take 1-2 days to dry completely, depending on the thickness of the sculpture (follow drying time instructions). When drying, place the figurine on wax paper to prevent the clay from sticking to the surface or discoloring.

When the colors are combined, it is very difficult to tell them apart. Create a marbled effect by mixing the two colors, but not completely.

Use a rolling pin or a sturdy rolling pin to roll the clay into a smooth circle about 1/4″ thick. Wrap the clay circle around the construction paper cone and trim the excess to create smooth edges. Add details with a toothpick, perhaps a basket weave design, ripples or just random lines.

Another method of making a cone is to roll a long clay ‘snake’. Wrap the “snake” around the construction paper cone so that the edges meet. We continue the roll until the cone takes the desired size. Press the colors together to form a solid cone.

Let the clay dry for a few minutes, then remove the construction paper. Fill the tip of the cone with clay to keep the shape.

Roll another piece of clay into a flat semicircle. Glue the half circle to the cone to hold the loaded “prize”.

Place fruits and vegetables or pictures on the table in front of the child. Working one object at a time, shape the clay into a fruit or vegetable. This is a great opportunity to talk and compare shapes, colors and textures. Also talk about foods the kids want to have for Thanksgiving.

Place the clay fruits and vegetables inside the cone and fill it to the top to keep the shape of the cone. Press the prize firmly into the cone to join, but be careful not to distort the ‘prize’.
