Design Your Own Planet, Populous Style

Few science fair projects are as timeless as the planet model, and for good reason. Planetary models demonstrate knowledge of the planet as well as the ability to depict its physical features and scale. Whether you’re creating a planet model for school or for fun, start by outlining your planet with papier-mâché or styrofoam. From there you can simply paint your planet or connect it to your solar system.

To make a papier-mâché planet model, lightly blow up a balloon to make a round shape, tie off the end, and place the balloon in a bowl. Make your glue in a separate bowl, then tear the paper into strips, dip them in the glue and cover the surface of the balloon with them. Try to smooth out the bubbles and bumps, if you don’t want the planet to have an uneven texture, then let the papier-mache dry overnight. When it dries, shoot the balloon with your finger, remove it and paint the planet as you like! If you want to make your own planet model out of styrofoam or thermocarbon, keep reading! In this set of workshops, we made a 3D model of the solar system for our afternoon project. It is designed to be completed in four sessions, allowing children to practice long-term project skills (such as patience and persistence). This project was meant to allow us to keep our afternoons in the creative hemisphere while doing what we do with Science Mornings.

New Planet Detected Around Star Closest To The Sun

A video tutorial was provided for this project that allowed the children to learn how to use the lessons. This is a great way to model the creative and effective use of technology!

The children showed great enthusiasm for this project and it was great to see them immerse themselves in the world of color and bring their creations to life.

Completion of the 3D solar system project This afternoon was a very special time as the children were excited to finish and see the final result of their work over the last few weeks. Some of the kids finished the unfinished planets and they all enjoyed using the glue gun to create their own planets into the early morning galaxy. Then it was time to write the labels for each planet. They did such a good job at it and were so ready to do it, it was amazing to see! It all came together even more beautifully than expected. Remember that feeling at school when you got to school and realized you forgot the project? Pure panic at the bottom of the stomach?! Yes, it happened to me today, but it wasn’t my homework, it was my daughter’s preschool. We were supposed to make a planet out of papier-mâché or styrofoam this week, and I was totally against it.

To make matters worse, she was too sick to stay at school, so we left and went straight to Michael’s Fast Stop. Thanks for my iPhone where I quickly googled ‘how to make a planet’. One of the first ones that appeared used old CDs or DVDs as “rings”. Perfect! I then had to google which planets have rings. (Yes… I will help with homework when she gets older.) I showed Layla and she liked the Saturn colors, bingo!

Planet Crafts For Kids

So, if you ever need to do an intergalactic project, all you need is a 4-inch styrofoam ball, some paint (we used Crayola), a toothpick, a CD or DVD, and some hot glue. Oh, and if you’re a little diva…you can throw on some glitter.

Cut a styrofoam ball in half for your child and then divide the color. I let Lilan pour her paint and enjoy. He wanted to color it in the ROYGBIV rainbow order, but I only gave him a choice of 4 colors. The little bugger got mixed up and turned green and purple anyway.

Then she decided to make it shine. I always do these outside on my old patio table so we don’t have bright colors all over the house.

After it dries (at bedtime) stick the DVD to the bottom of the planet. Then stick the toothpick in the middle and add some glue on top and voila! You have the easiest planet.

It was very easy for a child of about five years old, and it was cheap because all you needed to do was buy a styrofoam ball. This was a nice project to do while under the weather. I’m really proud of him (and me) for doing this mostly by himself. Of course I put on the hot glue, but she really did it herself. It’s hard as parents to let go and let them make a mess… but it was really fun for him. And me too. Plus, I learned a great lesson about the solar system…

Me: “Violet, are you sure you don’t want to do Mercury, it’s the red planet. Red is your favorite color.”
